Tired of the same old splash screen when you turn on your computer? Using KDE Desktop manager on your linux distribution? Try out one of UU Research and Developments free KDE Splash Screens. It only takes a minute or two to setup!

I'm new to linux, what is a splash screen?

Let me first say congratulations on the move. Linux is an incredible OS, free, open and secure. My favourite part? Not only can you do anything with the system but you can also run pretty much any windows, mac or android software you want as well, leaving really no reason to pay Windows OS just for business. But I digress, so in Linux a splash screen is an image or video file that is set to display while the computer is booting up. Nowadays most linux distributions are setup to display a splash screen by default, prior to this we were shown the text logs of the system loading each feature.

A cool benefit to using a modern splash screen is that at any point during the boot process you can quickly switch your fancy visual splash screen back to the original text log based one to check on your system. Each distro switches to the text based logs during boot up slightly different but the majority of them you simply press either the ESC key, Delete or F12 while the splash screen is visible. This gives you the polish of visual splash screen with all the functionality and visibility of a text based one.
